Penn State commit Nicholas Singleton is the Gatorade national football player of the year.

The Governor Mifflin five-star running back announced the news on Tuesday. It comes roughly a week after he was named the Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year.

Singleton crushed mostly PIAA Class 5A competition throughout his senior season. He is the all-time leading career rusher in Berks County history. That is thanks in part to a 2,043-yard season in 2021 that also included a whopping 41 touchdowns.

An On3 Consensus five-star and the nation’s No. 30 player and top running back in the Class of 2022, Singleton will officially become a Nittany Lion on Wednesday. That is the earliest date seniors and sign and deliver a National Letter of Intent to the school of their choice.

Penn State has long held the running back’s commitment. He picked the Lions over Alabama, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, and Wisconsin back on July 6 of this year. He took official visits to all of those schools and of course PSU. He claimed more than 40 offers. The one from Penn State came way back in July 2019, and that helped pave the way for his eventual pledge roughly two years later.

“The relationship with the whole coaching staff was a big part of it,” Singleton told BWI when he committed. “It was amazing. When I went up there for my official, it felt like home and my parents could see that, too. They felt like we were part of the family right from the start. Everyone treated us like family, which made it an easier choice.”

Singleton is the first Penn State commit to win the Gatorade national football player of the year award.

A Penn State commit has never taken home the award before Singelton.

Gatorade has been handing out this honor since 1985 – 1986. Indiana quarterback Jeff George, who played at Purdue and Illinois before a lengthy NFL career, was its first winner. Current USC quarterback Jaxon Dart is the most recent, as he took home last year’s honor.

On3 scouting report on Nicholas Singleton

“The most explosive running back in the 2022 cycle. Pairs a rocked up build with top athleticism and a violent running style. Has strong verified athleticism both on the track and in the combine setting. Hits the marks with top end speed, with several sub-11 second 100 meter times to his name. Transfers the athleticism over to the field where he has a high-level burst and long speed to pull away from defenses with ease. Is a loose and flexible runner despite his considerable twitch and strength.

“Runs with excellent body lean with pads over his feet, which aids in picking up yards after contact. More of a downhill runner but does show lateral agility and the ability to cut back. Does not play strong competition but utterly dominates like a top running back should. Extremely productive and efficient. Rushing for over 15 yards per carry and scoring on one out of every three touches well into his senior season.”
