Penn State has added a second non-conference opponent for the 2028 season, according to a report from FBSchedules.com. The outlet cites a signed contract that was obtained via a public records request to report that the Lions will host Mid-American Conference foe Ball State on Sept. 2, 2028. It should be the Lions’ season opener for that season.

Neither school has announced the agreement yet.

Per the contract, Penn State will pay Ball State $1.45 million to travel to Beaver Stadium for the September showdown. The Lions first and only meeting against the Cardinals came in 2021. Then, quarterback Sean Clifford threw for a touchdown and ran for another score, while linebacker Jesse Luketa had a 16-yard interception return for a touchdown in Penn State’s 44-143 triumph.

Ball State joins Syracuse on the Nittany Lions’ 2028 schedule. The Orange host head coach James Franklin’s team in Week 2 on Sept., 9, 2028. Unless the Big Ten changes its conference schedule number, one more non-conference foe must be added to the schedule between now and then.

Penn State opens the 2023 season against West Virginia. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 2 at Beaver Stadium. The team is inside of the top 10 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Associated Press top 25 polls. It checks in at No. 7 in both. The Lions held an open practice for fans on Saturday and will be back on the practice field Monday as preseason camp continues ahead of the opener in State College.
