Irvington (N.J.) safety Vaboue Toure anticipated making two official visits on the heels of a trip to Penn State last weekend. The four-star prospect committed to the Nittany Lions on Friday, however.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect was part of a group of official visitors on campus for the Nittany Lions second visit weekend of June. He was last on campus on Jan. 29 for an unofficial visit and attended Penn State’s matchup with Ohio State in October. The January trip gave him an opportunity to sit down and spend more time with safeties coach Anthony Poindexter. It was a pivotal moment in his recruitment.

“What I enjoyed most about the visit was getting to sit down and chop up my film and some game film with coach Poindexter,” Toure said following his most recent visit. “One thing that stood out to me was the new weight room, simply because I had never seen it before. It amazed me.”

Toure also had trips scheduled to Kentucky and Oklahoma in the next week. He also racked up scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Rutgers, USC and others through the process. He took four visits locally to Rutgers and two to Ohio State during his recruitment.

Penn State offered Toure in March of 2022

The No. 255 prospect in the Class of 2024 in the On3 Industry Rankings, Toure is the nation’s No. 22 safety by the metric. He’s also the No. 3 prospect in New Jersey in the current cycle. He’s higher in the On3 rankings, where he checks in at No. 133 nationally and as the No. 9 safety in the country.

Toure is the first commitment from New Jersey for the Nittany Lions in the Class of 2024. Penn State holds a pair from the Garden State in the Class of 2025 in offensive lineman Jaelyne Matthews and Omari Gaines. The Nittany Lions have not signed a New Jersey prospect since Amin Vanover in the Class of 2020.

He’s the second safety to commit to Poindexter in the Class of 2024, joining Maryland four-star Dejuan Lane. The pair join a defensive back class that includes Philadelphia cornerback Kenny Woseley and Florida cornerbacks Jon Mitchell and Antoine Belgrave-Shorter
