Penn State letterman Calvin Lowry is leaving the Nittany Lions after serving on James Franklin’s staff for one season as an analyst. He will be the new running backs coach at Middle Tennessee State, FootballScoop reported on Thursday.

Lowry played for Penn State from 2001-2005. He was a safety and punt returner. A Texas native who grew up in North Carolina, he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for Penn State in 2005 after netting 79 tackles and four interceptions. He started as freshman in 2002 and secured nine career interceptions.. Lowry earned his bachelor’s degree in Crime, Law and Justice from Penn State in 2007.

After college, the Tennessee Titans took Lowry in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played in 43 games as a pro, and had 57 tackles and two interceptions in the 2007 season.

Formerly the receivers coach at Tulsa, he joined the staff in State College last January. He also worked at Baylor from 2012 through 2014.

Tracking Penn State 2024 staff changes to date

Support staff changes happening after just one season are hardly uncommon. Take, for example, how Lowry reunited with the Lions in the first place. Penn State had an opening on its analyst staff after the 2022 season once Charlie Frye, who spent just a year in State College, took the open offensive coordinator job at Florida Atlantic. Like Frye, Lowry used a year under Franklin to reset his coaching career before returning to an on-field role.

Mark Dupuis is also joining the analyst department after a stint as Old Dominion’s receivers coach.

The Lions also lost Khalil Ahmad from the recruiting department. He took a promotion at Syracuse. Assistant recruiting coordinator for operations and visits Shannon Wellman has moved on, as well. She is replaced by recent Penn State alum Karsyn Kehler. Ahmad’s position is still listed.

As of Thursday, the on-field staff changes for Penn State are at the coordinator spots, with the aforementioned Kotlenicki and Allen replacing Mike Yurcich and Diaz, respectively. And, Stacy Collins is going back to Boise State. But, the Lions have hired Justin Lustig from Vanderbilt to replace him as the team’s special teams coordinator. Otherwise, the rest of Franklin’s 10-man assistant coaching staff is still intact as the offseason begins.
