Penn State tweets of the day
We start in the NFL. Penn State alum Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants did not agree on a long-term deal before a league-imposed deadline at 4 p.m. ET on Monday. It means that the veteran pro and former Nittany Lion will either have to sign a $10.1 million franchise tag tender to play for the NFC East franchise in 2023 or sit out the season. What he will do next is not yet clear.
“Barkley, 26, previously turned down a contract worth $13 million per year with $19.5 million guaranteed, sources said, because he is guaranteed $22.2 million if he plays on back-to-back tags in 2023 and 2024,” Ryan Dunleavy writes for the New York Post. “Multiple independent agents described $19.5 million as a non-starter. The sides cannot resume talks of an extension until after the 2023 season.
“Barkley is expected to be at the Exos training facility when the Giants open camp July 26 to both protect his body against the physical toll of practice and send a message of discontent, but he could drag his signing into the regular season if he is willing to miss weekly paychecks. He is not subject to fines for missing camp as long as the tag remains unsigned.”

In other news, a top Penn State football target in the Class of 2024 has set a decision date. Class of 2024 four-star lineman Liam Andrews is set to make his college choice on Friday. The Nittany Lions are in his top three along with South Carolina and Wisconsin. PSU leads on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine ahead of his announcement.
“These three schools made my final list due to the people at these programs and the relationships they’ve developed with me,” Andrews told On3. “All 3 programs have phenomenal head coaches, defensive line coaches, strength coaches, and other people. I have created strong relationships with all of these people which has really set them apart from the rest.”

Quote of the day
“I love their emphasis on winning the Big 10 and a national championship. They finished 7th last season and I feel like they’re just a couple steps away for making a run for a national championship. I also love their defensive scheme and how it caters to my athletic and aggressive play style. Finally, I have begun to develop a good bond with Coach Barnes and think he is a great man and coach.”
