Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports recently set out to answer an interesting question: Which teams play in the most blowouts, and which play in the most competitive games? His sample size was 2014-2023, but 2020 was excluded for obvious reasons. A blowout was described as a final score margin of 17-points or more. Teams made the blowout list for various reasons. Rutgers led it with a 67 percent blowout rate. The Scarlet Knights, obviously, have often been blown out since joining the Big Ten. Penn State, on the other hand, checked in at No. 14 overall with a blowout rate of 50.63 percent. That mark, of course, is due to the Nittany Lions blowing more teams out than not over the last 10 years with a couple of blowouts of the unfavorable kind mixed in, as well.
“This looks like bad news for the Big Ten,” Fornelli writes. “It features four of the top six programs with the highest blowout rate, and the league is adding the program with the 10th-highest blowout rate (Oregon). Then there’s Penn State at No. 14. All of this suggests what seems obvious: the Big Ten East was dominated by a few teams, while the Big Ten West was more competitive.”

Quote of the day
“Studying defenses more, seeing what type of front they’re in, pre-snap, post-snap. Just seeing what the defensive lineup is so I can react faster. Just being patient in the backfield, and when I see a hole, I just run through it. “I’m not trying to overthink stuff. Just trust my instincts. I’m going to try to split the defense and score.”
