Penn State football takes on Maryland this Saturday in College Park in hopes of stopping a three-game Big 10 losing streak. They face a familiar foe in the Terrapins who are an eerily similar 5-3 overall and 2-3 in conference competition. It’s not a surprise, since Penn State head Coach James Franklin and Maryland head coach Mike Locksley worked together for three seasons at Maryland early in their respective careers.

Host of the BWI Daily Edition Thomas Frank Carr delves into just how similar these two teams are in terms of how they play, and their offensive philosophies.

Penn State vs Maryland Offense:

First he examines the quarterbacks and where they rank among Big 10 passers to show how these two offenses try to win the same way. After that he gives one key difference between the two.

Those similarities are also apparent in the struggles that both offenses face when trying to play with balance. They have a similar identity up front that causes challenges when trying to run the football.

Defense:

The defensive side of the ball is where the real differences lie between the two teams. Maryland runs a very different scheme up front, but to a similar result as Penn State against the run.

The separator between the two teams so far this season has been the play of the secondary. T-Frank takes a look at their performance while in single coverage, and against common opponents in order to see who has the advantage.
