Penn State announces camp touchdown and takeaway kings; notes from practice: Newsstand
Penn State news, notes, and updates for Aug. 24 include the program’s preseason camp kings plus practice takeaways and more.
It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.
Penn State tweets of the day
We start with the players who were the preseason camp kicks for Penn State. Quarterback Drew Allar and receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith led the way with the most touchdowns. It’s encouraging news as the Lions aim to replace their starting quarterback and top pass catcher in 2023.
On the other side of the ball, first-year linebacker Tony Rojas and veteran cornerback Daequan Hardy were tops in the takeaways department. Buzz continues to build for Rojas, who came in and immediately turned heads in spring practice. He built on that this summer and is on track to burn his redshirt as a true freshman.
In other news, another practice availability is in the books. We learned that redshirt sophomore linebacker Dominic DeLuca will wear No. 0 this year. He’s the second Lion ever to do so after Jonathan Sutherland was awarded it before the 2020 season. It signifies special teams excellence.

The big takeaway otherwise is that head coach James Franklin revealed no position battle winners on Wednesday night. Those should come next Tuesday, when the 10th-year leader of the Lions holds his first game week news conference. See the headlines section below for more takeaways and notes from the evening.

Quote of the day
“The great thing for him is Penn State, better than they have in the last several years, has a proven ability to run the football. Their offensive line is better than they’ve been, and they’ve got some quality running backs. And that can be very, very helpful breaking a young quarterback in.
“He does not have to go out there and sling it around 40 times for them to be in a position to win. And he doesn’t have to make every critical play on third down. So I think just him playing within himself and leaning on what they can do well right now will help him grow.”
