One of Penn State’s assistant coaches received national recognition Tuesday ahead of tonight’s Fiesta Bowl matchup against Boise State. Tight ends coach Ty Howle, who’s now in his fourth season as an assistant coach, was named the 2024 FootballScoop Tight Ends Coach of the Year presented by AstroTurf.

A former Penn State player, Howle has helped develop a few NFL tight ends in recent years, but none of them had the kind of collegiate season we’ve been witnessing from senior Tyler Warren. This year’s Mackey Award winner, Warren finished his 2024 season with 1,095 yards receiving on 92 receptions. He also scored six receiving touchdowns. However, he made major impacts in other ways as well, totaling 197 yards rushing and four scores while also throwing six passes, three of which he completed, including one touchdown.

But Howle deserves credit for what he’s done in other key areas, including recruiting. This year, he helped sign three tight ends to the Class of 2025, most notably playing a major role in flipping Pennsylvania’s top overall prospect, tight end Andrew Olesh, from Michigan right before the deadline. Ohio native Brian Kortovoich and Virginia native Matt Henderson are also four-star players within the On300.

On top of that, the development that we’ve seen from Howle’s previous two major signings, Andrew Rappleyea and Luke Reynolds, has also been very encouraging. Rappleyea opened the season looking as if he’d play a big role in the offense until an injury ended his year. However, Reynolds’ ability to step up as a true freshman – as well the consistency we’ve seen from redshirt junior Khalil Dinkins – should give fans plenty of reason to feel confident about Penn State’s tight end room moving forward.

“His commitment to learning all the facets that we do with our tight ends has been really impressive,” Howle said earlier this week when asked about Reynolds’ development this season. “He lives and breathes football. He’s a football guy. He’s humble. There are a lot of similarities between him and Tyler. He just works, and so I think those are probably the biggest.”

Warren is currently ranked by ESPN as the top tight end prospect available for the 2025 NFL Draft. He’s also now up to the 16th-best prospect at any position.
