Penn State basketball lands forward Leo O'Boyle out of the NCAA transfer portal
Penn State basketball took another step toward building out its roster ahead of the 2023-24 season on Tuesday evening. With it, Mike Rhoades’ Nittany Lions continue to inch closer to filling all 13 scholarships.
Leo O’Boyle, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound, 3-point shooting forward from Lafayette, has committed to Penn State from the transfer portal. He has one COVID bonus year of eligibility remaining to play with the Nittany Lions.
Leo O’Boyle scouting profile
O’Boyle spent the past four seasons with the Leopards as a mainstay with the program. All were productive, averaging at least 7.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, beginning with his true freshman year in 2019-20.
Everything that followed from there got productively better. During a COVID-amended 2020-21 campaign, O’Boyle started 14 of 15 games played. He averaged 8.5 points and 3.0 rebounds while knocking down 39 of 111 shots from beyond the arc.
The effort would prove to be his least efficient from deep, connecting over the ensuing two seasons for a 35.7 percentage as a junior and a career high 40.7 percent as a senior.

Particularly excellent as a senior, O’Boyle was a team leader with 11.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game last year. He knocked down 74 of 182 3-point shots as a volume sharp shooter from deep.
Next steps for Penn State
Sharp Penn State fans might recognize O’Boyle’s name from a recent matchup between the Leopards and Nittany Lions. Facing off on Nov. 26, 2022 at the Bryce Jordan Center, O’Boyle was a lone bright spot for Lafayette in a 70-57 win for Penn State.
He finished the game scoring a team-high 19 points. He knocked down 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc over 26 minutes played.
O’Boyle continues the process of getting a full roster for Penn State for next season. And he does so as a one-year option, bringing vast experience to the lineup. He’s considered a strong addition for his shooting proficiency, as well as his ability to space the floor.
Penn State has cobbled together nine scholarship players. Four spots remain unfilled at present.
