Penn State basketball landed two transfers on Thursday in a move that bolstered their backcourt and scoring. Basketball insiders Nate Bauer and Dave Eckert break down the commitment of former Drexel guard Camren Wynter and Bucknell guard Andrew Funk.

Wynter’s 577 career assists place him third on Drexel’s all-time list. He’s also a prolific scorer, averaging double-digit points in each of his four seasons there. He’s posted at least 15 points per game in his last three seasons.

Wynter shot 43 percent from the field last season, averaging 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

In previous seasons, he’s been an effective three-point shooter for the Dragons. In 2020-21 — when Drexel made the NCAA Tournament — Wynter shot 41.5 percent from beyond the arc. That mark slipped to 27.8 last season.”

Bauer reacts to Penn State adding Funk

The addition of both players signals a big boost in the scoring for the Nittany Lions, who were in the bottom of the Big Ten last year. Bauer paints a similar picture to Eckert about Funk,

“Listed at 6-foot-5, 188 pounds, Funk is a prolific combo guard with a career 11.2 points per game average coming off an excellent senior season.

A four-year contributor at Bucknell, Funk comes to Penn State with high hopes for himself and the program. He posted a career-high 17.8 points per game and finished as a second-team All-Patriot League performer last season.”

For Penn State, the addition accomplishes an element Shrewsberry set out from the beginning. Namely, with Jalen Pickett and Myles Dread returning for bonus seasons of eligibility, and Dallion Johnson back as a redshirt sophomore, the Nittany Lions have boosted their scoring options at guard with the pickup.”

Lastly, the additions take the pressure off of Penn State’s five-man freshman class to produce right away. Funk and Wynter provide veteran scorers that can platoon with Pickett, Dread, and Johnson so that the young freshmen can work into the lineup when they’re ready.

It also means that Penn State is a quality landing spot for another transfer; if Shrewberry can lure in one more veteran,

“It’s an immediately more of a destination now for a big-man. For guys that are considering their options who might be in the transfer portal right now, or might get into the transfer portal, it’s gonna be something that Penn State is going to hammer home,” Bauer said on BWI’s YouTube channel Thursday.
