The first transfer portal addition of the 2025 spring cycle has been made official for the Penn State men’s basketball program. Josh Reed, a 6-foot-8 wing who spent his past three seasons playing for Cincinnati, has signed with the Nittany Lions for his final year of college basketball.

The program announced the addition officially on Monday, welcoming Reed.

“We are thrilled to welcome Josh to our Penn State Basketball family,” head coach Mike Rhoades said via press release. “He is a versatile player who can handle the ball, shoot from the perimeter and defend at a high level. Josh is a high-character young man and we’re excited to see him thrive both on and off the court at Penn State.”

A former On3 Industry Ranking three-star prospect in the Class of 2022, Reed was ranked No. 149 overall and played in 97 games over the past three seasons with the Bearcats. Finishing this past season with his highest volume shooting, Reed knocked down 55 of 134 shots from the floor (41.0 percent) and 20 of 64 shots from beyond the arc (31.3 percent) as a starter in nine of the 10 final Big 12 games. He also hit 11 of 28 3-pointers (39.2 percent), making a season-high three from deep in a February win over Utah.

From his portal addition analysis:

“Reed boasts the size and experience Penn State is looking to add to the roster this offseason. He is strong and physical on the floor but is considered versatile on the defensive end, able to guard bigger forwards, wings, and guards alike.
“He won’t be confused with a volume shooter, a la Zach Hicks (179 and 196 3-point attempts the past two seasons, respectively), but the threat checks off a box that Rhoades publicly prioritized in his evaluation of transfer portal needs.”

Reed has one season of eligibility remaining in his college basketball career. Through his first three seasons, his 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds during the 2024-25 campaign stand as high marks while averaging 17.6 minutes per game.
