Penn State news, notes, and updates for Sept. 15 include praise for the Lions, a former player who is set to start at quarterback elsewhere, and more.

It’s time to dive into Friday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with ESPN’s Week 3 college football preview. The outlet calls Penn State one of five teams who have been pleasant surprises so far.

“It might be a stretch to say they have surprised, because Penn State started the season ranked in the top 10,” Tom VanHaaren writes. “But for fans who don’t pay attention nationally or regionally, it probably has been a surprise to see the Nittany Lions playing as well as they have through the first two weeks with a new quarterback.

Michigan and Ohio State have gotten all the attention in the Big Ten, but the Lions are going to get more and more at the rate they’re playing.”

In other news, former Penn State quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson will start again for UCONN. He lost the Huskies’ first-team job to Joe Fagano coming out of training camp. But Fagano has suffered an early season-ending injury just as Roberson did a year ago. So, the New Jersey native will start again.

“It’s really devastating for Joe,” UConn coach Jim Mora said. “As a team we have great confidence in Ta’Quan obviously, and Zion (Turner) behind him, but it’s devastating for Joe. It’s a fairly significant injury.

“Now this year, the guy ahead of Ta’Quan gets hurt. And, now Ta’Quan gets his chance again. We have a lot of confidence in him. And, we’re really disappointed for Joe.”

Quote of the day

“As far as Tyler goes, kind of the same deal,” Howle said. “He transitioned from a quarterback and has improved in a lot of areas as far as tight end play. I love watching Tyler play the game. He plays with tremendous effort and throws his body around, and obviously brings a lot of special teams value. Being able to do that, and play in space, and he has tremendous ball skills and a high football IQ.
