Penn State football’s ascent in the Class of 2023 On3 Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings continued Friday. It did so for the second-straight day, bolstered by the verbal commitment of four-star linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson Friday evening.

Robinson picked Penn State over Miami in a commitment ceremony streamed live on Instagram. Listed at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Robinson is an On3 Consensus four-star with the nation’s No. 126 overall ranking. He’s also rated as the country’s ninth-best linebacker and the third-ranked player in Pennsylvania.

And his commitment served as a boost to Penn State’s overall class standing.

With Robinson’s call, the Nittany Lions jumped up another spot, this time to No. 8 in the updated On3 Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings for the Class of 2023. Before the commitment of fellow linebacker Tony Rojas on Thursday afternoon, Penn State stood at No. 10 in the rankings.

In a back-and-forth at the top, Notre Dame has jumped back ahead of Ohio State to lead the nation. The Buckeyes are followed by Alabama, Texas, Clemson, Miami, Georgia, Penn State, LSU, and Tennessee.

Penn State football’s newest addition

One of the top linebackers in the country, Robinson’s addition was always meant to be a tandem effort. No coincidence that the Pittsburgh, Pa., product made his announcement one day after Rojas’, Robinson revealed to BWI what went into his decision.

“When we were up there, Coach [Manny] Diaz was saying that they wanted to bring both of us together on the visit,” Robinson said. “They wanted us to get around each other. They only planned for two [linebackers] this year and we’ve been their top guys from the start. So, it was good hearing that from him and then also connecting with Tony. We’ve gotten pretty close now. They said they would’ve loved for us to commit right [then], but no matter how long we needed, they’re not pushing for any other guys until we’re ready.”

Now aboard Penn State’s Class of 2023, Rojas became the 14th four-star commitment in the class. He’s also the sixth highest-rated prospect in the Nittany Lions’ 19-man haul.

Penn State recruiting rankings impact

The Nittany Lions’ overall commitment list of 19 is second among the nation’s top 10 programs in the updated rankings. Notre Dame remains ahead slightly with 20, followed by Penn State, then Ohio State, Texas, and Tennessee, which have 18 apiece.

Penn State’s updated score, just as it did with Rojas’ commitment, also continues to climb. In a week that also included Rojas and four-star running back London Montgomery committing, the number is up from 91.319 to a new grade of 91.552. That stands behind Georgia’s 91.638 only slightly.

The average player rating, listed at 90.04 in the proprietary rankings after Rojas’ verbal, also jumped up to 90.15 with Robinson’s commitment Friday.
