David Cobb of CBS Sports has another new preseason rankings list out. This time, it focuses on current coordinators would could next become head coach candidates at the college football level. We start today’s newsstand there. One of the assistants listed by Cobb is first-year Penn State offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. He joined the Lions this offseason after stints at Buffalo and Kansas. Kotelnicki replaces Mike Yurcich, who was fired by Penn State coach James Franklin in November.
“How long before the Lance Leipold coaching tree begins sprouting some significant branches? Kotelnicki worked as Leipold’s offensive coordinator for the past 11 seasons at Wisconsin-Whitewater, Buffalo and Kansas,” Cobb writes. “Now, he’s leaving his mentor to spread his wings as Penn State’s offensive coordinator. If that move produces the results the Nittany Lions hope it does, Kotelnicki’s stock will surge.”
Kotelnicki has a former five-star quarterback in Drew Allar, two of the best running backs in the sport, and an extremely productive No. 1 tight end. But, he must bring along the Lions receivers room while also dealing with three new full-time starters on the offensive line.

“You get to do a lot of different things [in Kotelnicki’s offense],” Kaytron Allen, who runs the backfield with classmate Nicholas Singleton, said in March. “It isn’t just you standing in the backfield. You could be in the slot. You could be the outside receiver. You’re just doing different types of things to show our talents. It’s a great offense.

Quote of the day
“Coach (Mike) Rhoades and Coach (Jamal) Brunt have been mainly supportive over everything. I know they just guy there, but I think they can switch a lot of things around as far as their style of play coming over from VCU. I think what they do will translate well, especially with how he coaches.”
