Penn State coach James Franklin is not expecting junior defensive end Chop Robinson to miss the remainder of the 2023 season after he suffered a scary-looking injury and was eventually carted off the field at Ohio State last Saturday. But, whether or not the standout pass rusher will be back in action Saturday when the Nittany Lions host Indiana at Noon on CBS is not yet clear.

“As from what I understand and from what I see, and from what I know, I don’t see this being a long-term issue,” Franklin said. “But you never know when it comes to medical. But hopefully, we’ll be getting Chop back here soon. As you guys know, I’m pretty open when it’s a season-ending injury. I don’t see that.”

Robinson immediately reacted with pain and remained down on the Ohio Stadium turf after a pass-rushing collision with Ohio State lineman Matthew Jones. The team’s medical staff worked on the Nittany Lion while he was on his stomach. It later rolled him onto his back and eventually helped him sit up. Then, two people assisted Robinson to the sideline medical tent. A short while later, he was carted off to the locker room with a towel over his head. The Penn State player was seen outside of the team’s locker room after the game.

The nature of the injury has not yet been disclosed, per program policy. Franklin was not asked to address the status of Amin Vanover. The defensive end was also hurt in the game and left the field with help from a member of the training staff. His status for Saturday is unclear, too.

For all the success he’s had at Penn State, narrative of beating Ohio State or big games:

Wishes he had answered it on Saturday, but thinking about that game at the time. More than fair to judge him and staff for all of it. That’s what it’s about. The good, the bad, the consistency. The lack of success in that game. All of it. It’s totally fair to be judged by all of those things.

But also important to judge the entire body of work, all of it. Doesn’t need to get into it now because it’ll come off the wrong way. But totally fair to be judged on all of it, the good and the bad.

On the Penn State-Ohio State game:

Positives from the game: Went on the road, battled No. 3 team in the country and had a chance to win down to the end. Protected the football. Handled crowd noise well. For majority of the game, played if not one of the defenses of the country, and so was theirs. Field goals were huge, great to get those points.

Opportunities for growth: Too many controllable mistakes to win in that environment. Tackled too high. Need to tackle lower and be more consistent. Story of the game was third down, which impacted other things on offense.
