STATE COLLEGE — Penn State beat Rutgers 27-6 on Saturday. It did so despite losing quarterback Drew Allar to an injury in the third quarter. The second-year Nittany Lion and first-year starter took off on what appeared to be a designed run and picked up eight yards before a collision with Scarlet Knights’ defender Flip Dixon in the third quarter. He was hit in the upper body, with contact on his right shoulder. Allar threw an incomplete pass before exiting the game. He went right to the program’s sideline injury tent. What’s his status after the game?

“As you guys know, I’m not going to get into medical stuff,” Franklin said. “It would not be appropriate for Drew, for his family, but I don’t see this being significant. But, we will see.”

“What he had done the whole game, and the whole season, is get as many yards as he can and get down. He was just about to get down, and somebody got to him, and hit him just right. He was really good as the game went on. His leadership was phenomenal.”

Beau Pribula took over with Allar sidelined. He ran for 39 yards on his first play to put Penn State in the red zone. However, the Lions were stuffed on 4th and 1. Allar exited the injury tent following the series. He stood on the sideline, favoring his right shoulder, and appeared to be in significant discomfort. At the time of the injury, Penn State led Rutgers 10-6. Pribula completed the only pass he attempted for nine yards. He also ran eight times for a game- and team-high 79 yards in the triumph.

“When Drew got hurt and Beau came in, it opens things up for you in the run game. We planned on playing both throughout that game. I thought when Beau came in he did a nice job.

“I thought we had a good plan. Some of our zone read stuff that we do, some of the similar things that we did against Iowa and thought there was carryover and make sense. When Beau would come in the game, they have to respect the zone read. It changes how you call the game defensively. And Drew’s done more of that as the season has gone on.”

More from Penn State coach James Franklin

Franklin spoke with reporters in the Beaver Stadium media room following the win. He started with an opening statement.

“I want to thank the fans,” Franklin said. “Got to give Rutgers credit. They do a nice job. I have a lot of respect for Coach Schiano and Rutgers. They are a hard-nosed bunch. They play like that against everybody. We won the turnover battle. They’re 1-17 when they lose that stat. So, that was going to be important. We were more explosive. We won all of our critical areas.

“Johnny Dixon has really played well this year. It’s unusual when you talk about a corner and sacks. But, he’s leading all FBS in sacks by corners, which is unusual. With Drew getting banged up, Beau Pribula came in and did a great job, specifically with his legs. Chop continues to play lights out for us. KJ Winston has really played well all season long. And, I thought Kobe King has put together a really nice year. Overall, pleased with the step we took today against a really good Rutgers team. Looking forward to next week. We have a short week, very different week, with playing on Friday night.”
