What Penn State WR Jahan Dotson's coaches said after he was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft
The Washington Commanders selected Penn State Nittany Lions wideout Jahan Dotson with the 16th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft Thursday night.
Dotson, the fifth wideout off the board, became the 40th first-round draft choice in Penn State history.
He’s also the fourth Nittany Lion wide receiver to go in the first round — the first since Bryant Johnson in 2003.
Dotson concluded his Penn State career with 183 receptions for 2,757 yards and 25 receiving touchdowns.
Here’s what his Penn State coaches, as well as his Washington skipper Ron Rivera, said after the pick was made:
Penn State head coach James Franklin
“We are so proud of Jahan for being selected by the Washington Commanders. He will be a tremendous addition to the Commanders organization. Jahan has an intense, laser-like focus on greatness and a competitive edge that will serve him well at the next level. His quickness, sure hands, and route running ability will make him a dangerous and explosive threat in the NFL.
“Jahan is a perfect example of what we want our program to be all about. As impressive as his accomplishments were at Penn State on the field, Jahan’s thoughtfulness and character have always impressed me the most. We are very appreciative of everything Jahan has done to represent our program the right way, and I wish him nothing but the best in his NFL career.”

PSU WRs coach Taylor Stubblefield
“I am incredibly happy for Jahan and this opportunity he is getting with the Washington Commanders. Jahan has worked his tail off to be in the position he’s in right now. He believed in the process, he believed in the program, he trusted Coach Franklin and he trusted myself.
“He made the most of every single one of his opportunities. Jahan had an opportunity to leave after his third year, but he wanted to come back and play for his brothers and also improve his draft status, which I believe he has done. He will truly be one of the best receivers to ever play at Penn State.”
Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera
“Probably the biggest thing, more than anything else, is one of the guys we really liked was there. And that’s why we jumped on it. The thing that’s really good about the way he plays, that you really appreciate, is that he goes after the football. He’s got a tremendous catch radius as you saw by some of the highlights.
“His focus on the ball is tremendous…On those 50/50 balls, he’s coming down with them. So you’re excited about that. He reminds of DeSean Jackson a little bit. He reminds me of Steve Smith a little bit. A guy with a little bit of a smaller statue that plays bigger than that.”
