Penn State news, notes, and updates for Jan. 4 include more all-star accolades for Cooper Cousins, plus headlines of the day and more.

It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with an update on Cooper Cousins. The four-star Penn State offensive line signee from Erie, Pa., was a top performer for the East team at Tuesday’s All-American Bowl practice in Texas.

“Through two days, Cooper Cousins has looked like the top interior offensive lineman at All-American Bowl practices,” On3 Director of Scouting Charles Powers writes. “He continued to look strong throughout Day 2, winning the majority of his reps. The Penn State signee is a bull on the interior. At 6-foot-6, 325 pounds, Cousins is a mountain of a center. He carries his weight very well and is an easy mover. Cousins has flashed good hand placement to go with his advanced physical traits.

“Once he latches onto a defensive lineman, the rep is typically over. The readymade size also allows for unique positional versatility. It’s not inconceivable to see him playing multiple spots along the offensive front in State College. The future Nittany Lion looks like one of the more ready-to-play offensive linemen in San Antonio.”

The All-American Bowl is Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. NBC will televise it.

In other news, Lions quarterback signee Ethan Grunkemeyer has wrapped up his time at the Under Armour game. He was 7-of-16 for 43 yards and threw two interceptions and ripped off a 13-yard run as Team Fire struggled in a 39-9 loss. All reports indicate the Penn State early enrollee held his own in Florida during the practices, however, and the game is always a toss-up performance-wise for a variety of reasons.

Quote of the day

“Yeah, it’s a little different this year, just being an Olympic year, and having several guys trying to make the [U.S. National] team. We had to factor that in and try to give our guys had best chance to be successful. But we’re excited to compete and get going here. Oregon State will be a great match and then we’ll jump into the Big Ten schedule ready to roll.”
