Future Penn State quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer was named a top performer by On3 Friday evening following the event’s conclusion. After being named the event’s most valuable player following day one, Grunkemeyer continues to impress Thursday and Friday. He ended up ranking third overall in On3’s top-performer rankings.

“Grunkemeyer was perhaps the most pleasant surprise at the Elite 11 Finals,” wrote On3 Scouting Director Charles Power. “The Penn State pledge flashed arguably the most explosive arm action at the event. From early on in Day 1, the ball jumped out of Grunkemeyer’s hand. He easily drove the ball downfield on a line – as well as anyone.

“The Lewis Center (Ohio) Olentangy product was the On3 MVP on Day 1 with a very impressive day in drill work. He backed that up with a strong showing during his pro day, flashing loose, coordinated movements to go with his plus arm. Grunkemeyer had an up and down 7-on-7 session on Day 3 but still made a number of high level throws. He showed he could go throw for throw alongside the best quarterback prospects in the cycle.”

Commitment Impact: Penn State gets versatile safety in Vaboue Toure

According to On3’s Industry Ranking, which weighs all four major recruiting sites, the future Penn State signal-caller came into this year’s Elite 11 as the lowest-ranked player at No. 642 nationally. That’s taken a considerable jump in just the past few days following an update by Rivals. He’s now No. 474 nationally.

As a junior, Grunkemeyer threw for 2,863 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also rushed for just over 200 yards, scoring four more touchdowns with his feet. In an interview with BWI earlier this week, Power made it clear that his performance on the field this fall will have a larger impact on his rating than just the Elite 11.

With that said, Penn State fans will be watching him closely now for a potential fourth star in the months ahead.

“Grunkemeyer’s a guy who, for us in terms of the rankings, he’s an 89 right now. He’s in that next tier of guys who are on the cusp of being a four-star,” Power said. “So we’ll be kind of looking to see how he stacks up with the guys who are four stars currently. Then, when we get into his senior year in a couple of months, that’s when we’ll really drill down on where they all stack up.”
