Penn State quarterback commit in the Class of 2023, Jaxon Smolik, played his first high school game of the 2022 season last Friday. Unfortunately for Smolik and Dowling Catholic, they fell to Southeast Polk 28-24 in a rivalry game and a rematch from last postseason. To give you a sense of how the Nittany Lions commit performed, we'll dive into his game film and put context to his 283 yards on 25 completions. No quarterback operates in a vacuum, so it's essential to understand the personnel and scheme that Smolik is working on before we can assess how he did. So let's start with the basics of the Dowling Catholic offnese. The team runs a spread offense that generally operates in either ten (one running back and four receivers) or 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end, and three receivers). They are an RPO and play-action heavy offense that places the brunt of the ground game production on the right arm of Smolik. Because of this, he's making several reads pre-snap to determine what part of the defense to attack. For the most part, he does a very good job of making the correct decision in these circumstances, especially on RPO plays.
