Penn State news, notes, and updates for April 27 focus on praise for a Lions’ defender after spring practice, plus an NFL Draft nugget and more.

It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Headlines of the day

We start with the NFL Draft. It begins tonight in Kansas City, Mo., with the first round of picks. Only 31 will be made since the Miami Dolphins had to forfeit theirs. Former Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr., is expected to be the only Lion selected Thursday. If so, he will become the first defensive back in program history to go in the first round. Unsurprisingly, he’s the highest-ranked Lion in NFL Draft expert Daniel Jeremiah’s top 150 player rankings. He checks in at No. 23.

“Porter Jr. has elite size, length and speed for the position,” Jeremiah writes. “He is at his best in press coverage, where he can use his rare arm length to re-route wideouts.

“Overall, Porter should be a Day 1 starter capable of matching up with the bigger wideouts around the league.”

Porter Jr., is joined on the list by former teammate Ji’Ayir Brown. The safety is No. 66. Tight end Brenton Strange, then, is No. 91.

In other news, On3 national college football reporter Matt Zenitz polled sources to pick 15 spring standouts on defense. Second-year Lions defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton is one of them. Zenitz writes:

“After watching Dennis-Sutton during Penn State’s spring game, Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin summed up the performance by saying, “Dani was unblockable out there.” It was the latest of Dennis-Sutton flashing big-time ability during Penn State’s spring practice. He’ll be part of a highly talented group of defensive ends along with returning starters Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson. “I think he’s gonna have a big year for us.” Franklin said after the spring game.”

Quote of the day

“My main thing with the D-line and D-line coach is that all of their guys are different sizes. You have some who are smaller, some who are taller or longer or whatever. Everyone there is their own person, which I think, for a defensive line, is great. They got a lot of guys who can go make plays.”
