Penn State has lost its first player to the NCAA transfer portal since it lost to Ole Miss, 38-25, in the Peach Bowl last Saturday. Walk-on defensive end Jake Wilson is now seeking a new college football home. He hit the portal on Tuesday, a source confirmed to Blue-White Illustrated

Wilson played in 13 games for the Nittany Lions this season. Most of that work came on special teams. He was an active member of multiple units for coordinator Stacy Collins over the last two seasons. The Nazareth native saw time in a total of 27 games during his time in blue and white. A 2019 PIAA Class 6A all-state selection, he was picked as the team’s defensive developmental squad player of the week at least six times during his career at Penn State. And, he was an Academic All-Big Ten pick a year ago.

Wilson is the third Nittany Lions to hit the portal since the regular season ended. Punter Alex Bacchetta has moved on to Rice. And, walk-on defender Jace Tutty is going to Youngstown State.

Penn State football undergrads can enter the NCAA transfer portal until Jan. 4. That is later than the listed Jan. 2 deadline for other undergraduates due to the timing of the team’s bowl game.

Our well-established network of reporters and contacts across college athletics keeps you up to speed in several ways. We have articles written about players as they enter and exit the transfer portal or find their new destination, a dedicated transfer portal Twitter accountand the On3 Transfer Portal wire.

The transfer portal wire provides a real-time feed of player activity, including basic player profile information, transfer portal ranking, and original On3 Consensus recruiting ranking, as well as NIL valuation (name, image, and likeness).

While the transfer portal officially opens for business on Dec. 4 for undergraduate players, grad transfers can enter it at any time. This specific transfer portal window runs through Jan. 2, 2024. It is important to note that a player does not need to make his decision by the deadline. Undergrads do, however, have to declare their intent to enter the portal by then. When they pick their next school or decide to return to their current one after that is up to them. A second transfer portal window will run April 15-30.
