Penn State defensive line coach search continues; Bo Nickal wins his UFC debut: Newsstand
Penn State news and notes for March 6 include updates on Nittany Lion wrestling, football, and an alum in the UFC, plus much more.
It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.
Penn State tweets of the day
We start with the Penn State football assistant coaching search. FootballScoop originally reported on Saturday that Chicago Bears assistant defensive line coach Justin Hinds was the target of Lions coach James Franklin for its open defensive line coaching job. However, the outlet walked that report back on Sunday, writing, “Update on this. Sources tell us Hinds plans to remain with the Bears.”
Penn State has been searching for its replacement for John Scott Jr., since he left the program last Monday. He is expected to join the NFL’s Detroit Lions.
In other news, former Penn State national champion wrestler Bo Nickal won his UFC debut on Saturday night. He stopped Jamie Pickett via submission in the first round. However, Pickett’s team is appealing the result, as it says that a low blow led to it. Nickal disputed that characterization of his first UFC win

“I know exactly what happened,” Nickal said, per Yahoo. “I hit him in the leg, in the thigh, I had him in a bad position on the wall, so he wanted to get off the wall and he wanted the ref to stop it. If I had actually hit him low, I would feel bad because I don’t want to win that way.
“I’m not a cheater, I’m not someone that tries to take shortcuts, so if I did hit him low, I would have just relaxed probably or let the ref stop it, but I didn’t hit him low at all. It’s a weird move, bro.”
