Open practice review

While we’ve covered it already this week on the BWI Live Monday show, we’ll review some big-picture items from the Saturday scrimmage. The show discusses the defensive line performance and how to evaluate Saturday’s performance. Galanti also asks about the offense, quarterbacks, and the major takeaways from the evening.

Here’s an excerpt.

It wasn’t all that long ago when Penn State football struggled to get through spring practice because they didn’t have enough offensive linemen. Coming out of the 2021 season, Penn State was banged up and thin at several positions to the point that they had to modify practice and the 2022 spring game.

Now? Head Coach James Franklin has raved about his team’s depth when asked about the strengths of his 2023 squad. Not only does that bode well for the upcoming season, but his team is able to do more work in the same amount of time during training camp.

“We’re two-spotting right now. That was the plan going into camp. So, have two team periods going on at the same time. Either ones and twos and threes and fours on a different field,” Franklin said during his Thursday media session in Holuba Hall.

“So the amount of reps really haven’t improved for the ones. But the amount of reps for the twos and threes have gone up dramatically in terms of getting those guys prepared. So I think there’s been a ton of value in it.”

Fan questions and fourth down

The second half of the show focuses on questions submitted to the show by fans. They tackle a range of topics, including the growth and development of coaches on the Penn State roster, Jaxon Smolik’s progress as the team’s third quarterback, defensive tackle breakout candidates, and more.

Finally, a Blue White Illustrated Lions Den member wanted to know more about the team’s fourth-down success after last week’s show. The show’s final quarter covers the data behind fourth-down decisions, Penn State’s success last year, and the disconnect between the information and the execution by coaches.
