Penn State news, notes, and updates for June 29 include the final Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, Roman Bravo-Young’s UFC Fight Pass debut, and much more.

It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a look back at the 2022-2023 school year. Penn State finished 15th in the final Learfield Directors’ Cup standings with 986 points.

It’s a massive improvement from last year, when the Lions finished 43rd. This year’s tally was highlighted by an NCAA title for men’s wrestling, semifinal appearances for men’s volleyball, field hockey, and men’s lacrosse, plus a Rose Bowl victory for the football team. Eighteen different programs ultimately contributed to the final mark.

Stanford won this year’s Learfield Directors’ Cup with 1,412 points.

In other news, Roman Bravo-Young is set to make his UFC Fight Pass debut tonight. He’ll be in action in a submission grappling match opposite Alex Perez. The event starts at 9 pm ET though it’s unclear when the ‘RBY’ match will start.

The competition is a way for him to stay sharp as he continues to prep for an Olympic freestyle wrestling shot one day, as well. MMA is in his future, but this is a good cross-training chance for now.

“The key is that when I fully feel like I am done with wrestling and just don’t have any fire, I am going to switch over,” Bravo-Young told UFC.com.

“Now, I cross train, yes. We work hands, we work striking, we work grappling. But you know I can be good with being patient and learning the fundamentals and building up slowly. I think the key thing is time, and there is no need to rush it.”

Quote of the day

“I don’t have a number, but me and my wife kind of go back and forth on this all the time, I don’t really know what I would do. I don’t have a whole lot of other hobbies. So I worry a little bit about that. She always talks to me about going on TV. I’ve done a little bit of that, some of that broadcasting stuff. But I’m not really sure — I don’t have a number in my mind. I think a lot of it’s going to be just how I feel, you know, those types of things.

“It’s not just how I feel but do I feel like I have the energy to give what college football takes nowadays and what Penn State needs. So it’s more of that; it’s not a number it’s kind of a feel.”
