Penn State adds Pennsylvania native Jordan Mayer out of transfer portal
Penn State has picked up another player via the transfer portal, adding redshirt freshman Jordan Mayer.
Listed at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, Mayer spent the past season at Wisconsin but decided back on Dec. 7 to enter the transfer portal. He was listed as an outside linebacker on the 2023 Wisconsin roster but could also play defensive end at the next level. He didn’t earn any snaps this past season for the Badgers, giving him four years to play four.
A Class of 2023 prospect, Mayer played at Thomas Jefferson High School in Clairton, Pa. He visited with Penn State head coach James Franklin and his staff back in Jan. 2022 but didn’t earn a scholarship from the Nittany Lions at the time. Just a few months later, Mayer committed to Boston College in March, but after earning an offer from Wisconsin a month later, the Badgers gave him something to think about.

Mayer took an official visit to Cincinnati, June 3-5, 2002, and had visits scheduled with Virginia Tech and West Virginia for later that month. However, once he took his official visit to Wisconsin the following week, June 9-11, he announced his commitment to the Badgers. Mayer originally committed to former head coach Paul Chryst and then stuck with his commitment when Luke Fickell left Cincinnati to take over in Madison following the season.
Coming out of high school, Mayer earned a three-star rating by On3 and was the 16th-ranked player in Pennsylvania for the 2023 class. Duke, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse and Vanderbilt were the other Power Five schools that offered out of high school. He earned 22 scholarship offers total.
Mayer is now the third player to commit to Penn State out of the transfer portal. Kicker Chase Meyer is set to walk-on following a year at Tulsa. He committed on Dec. 17. The Nittany Lions have also added former Ohio State wide receiver Julian Fleming on Jan. 3.

Our well-established network of reporters and contacts across college athletics keeps you up to speed in several ways. We have articles written about players as they enter and exit the transfer portal or find their new destination, a dedicated transfer portal Twitter account, and the On3 Transfer Portal wire.
The transfer portal wire provides a real-time feed of player activity, including basic player profile information, transfer portal ranking, and original On3 Consensus recruiting ranking, as well as NIL valuation (name, image, and likeness).
While the transfer portal officially opens for business on Dec. 4 for undergraduate players, grad transfers can enter it at any time. This specific transfer portal window runs through Jan. 2, 2024. It is important to note that a player does not need to make his decision by the deadline. Undergrads do, however, have to declare their intent to enter the portal by then. When they pick their next school or decide to return to their current one after that is up to them. A second transfer portal window will run April 15-30.
