Penn State football has opened its preseason practices this week. Blue White Illustrated is chatting about it, and the upcoming campaign, in the Lions Den.

And, with media day set for Saturday, the moment is ripe for conversation and questions to be answered. The Nittany Lions are hoping to improve on their back-to-back 10-2 regular seasons, unable to get over the hump of a first College Football Playoff appearance for the program.

For instance:

  • Which players are most likely to earn buzz within the program by the end of camp?
  • How is Andy Kotelnicki’s coaching style different from Mike Yurcich?
  • What dynamics are in play for Drew Allar as he aspires to improve his leadership?
  • Of which preseason narrative are we most skeptical?
  • Who will lead the offense in receptions and yards if Trey Wallace takes the top spot?
  • Which safeties are in line to compete to solidify the position’s depth this preseason?

And, maybe most important, where are the Nittany Lions, and specifically Allar, as they attempt to transition to Kotelnicki’s offense?

“I feel really good. When I get into fall camp, I’m sure I’m gonna feel better because I’m always a reps guy. The more I can take that rep and physically do it, and then rewatch it back on film, the better I feel about it,” said Allar. “And now I’m able to have open dialogue with Coach K, Danny, and Coach Franklin… And I can offer suggestions. They’re super open to not only me, but really the all the players and getting it down to how we want as players.

“Because the one difference I will say in the offense, I feel is, we’re a lot more player led this year. Obviously Coach K and the whole offensive staff is tremendous leaders for us. But they’ve really allowed us to step up our game as leaders and I think that’s been really good for us this spring and summer.”
