Penn State involved with more than 100 prospects in initial 2027 On300

Penn State head coach James Franklin is often recognized as one of the most aggressive recruiters in the country and that was once again evident Monday with the release of the initial On300 for the Class of 2027.
Back in August, On3 Scouting Director Charles Power and his team released their watchlist of 100 sophomores from across the country ahead of the 2024 season. That list has now tripled to 300 and features more than 100 players that Penn State has an interest in.
Currently, the Nittany Lions hold commitments from McKeesport, Pa., running back Kemon Spell and Middletown, Del., offensive lineman Layton von Brandt. Both players remain ranked among the nation’s best, with Spell ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 1 at the position. Meanwhile, von Brandt was moved to offensive tackle and is now ranked No. 6 overall at the position. He also moved up from No. 60 overall nationally to No. 37.
Pennsylvania looks to be particularly strong. Not only did nine in-state players make the list, but six of them are ranked among the Top 100. In addition to Spell, another Western Pennsylvania native, Seton LaSalle wide receiver Khalil Taylor, could eventually become a five-star at No. 16 overall nationally. Taylor is also now the second-ranked wide receiver. On the eastern half of the state, Coatesville prospect Maxwell Hiller remains high at No. 40 overall and No. 2 as an interior offensive lineman, while wide receiver Matthew Gregory from Pottstown debuts at No. 47 nationally at No. 8 overall at receiver.

Two other notables are wide receiver Javien Robinson, who plays with Spell at McKeesport, and Lansdale Catholic offensive tackle Terrance Smith is at No. 93. Robinson is ranked No. 74 at No. 14 at wide receiver, while Smith is ranked No. 93 nationally at No. 3 as an interior offensive lineman. Both Robinson and Smith haven’t earned an offer from Penn State yet but have visited on multiple occasions. Smith will return to Happy Valley on April 5.
Top targets in surrounding states like Maryland and New Jersey also made the cut. In Maryland, defensive end James Pace III (No. 83) and Myles McAfee (No. 207) are priority players for Penn State. Both have visited State College multiple times already and are planning to return this spring but haven’t set a specific date yet.

The Garden State features one of the region’s top overall prospects in Ath. Xavier Sabb, who’s ranked No. 7 overall nationally. Defensive end Aidan O’Neil (No. 114), offensive lineman Sidney Rouleau (No. 219) and linebacker Mikahi Allen (No. 237) also hold offers from Penn State and have visited previously.
