Penn State football is still over six months away from its season opener against West Virginia, but that hasn’t stopped FanDuel from releasing two preseason spreads that include the Nittany Lions. We’ll recap that, as well the news that former Nittany Lion D’Anton Lynn will be coaching in the Big Ten soon.

With still 239 days to go until Penn State travels to Columbus on Oct. 21, needless to say a lot will impact the spread between now and then. However, FanDuel became the first major sportsbook to release lines for the 2023 college football season Wednesday. Penn State’s games against Ohio State and Michigan both received an early look.

Following losses to both teams in back-to-back seasons, it should be no surprise that the Nittany Lions are the underdog in both games. With Ohio State being on the road this year, that spread opened at Penn State getting a touchdown. It’s actually climbed since then, with the spread now sitting at Penn State +8.

As for the game against Michigan, that’s expected to be much closer. The Wolverines will travel to Beaver Stadium on Nov. 11 this year. With nine games to play leading up to it, the spread will look much different in eight months from now. But, if you think this is the year Penn State gets revenge, it may not be a bad idea to bet it now, as Fanduel opened the line at +1. The line currently sits at Penn State +1.5.

In other news, UCLA is expected to hire former Nittany Lion D’Anton Lynn as its defensive coordinator. On3’s Matt Zenitz reported the news late Wednesday evening.

Lynn played at Penn State from 2008 to 2011 and is the son of former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn. He spent the past two seasons working for Jim Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens coaching safeties.

Lynn got into coaching in 2014 after a short professional career. He worked as a defensive assistant for the Buffalo Bills in 2015 and 2016 before joining the Chargers in 2017. He was then named the assistant secondary coach for the Houston Texans from 2018 to 2019 before becoming the lead assistant secondary coach in 2020. That led him to coaching the safeties with the Ravens the past two seasons.

UCLA will play one final season in the Pac-12 this fall before joining the Big Ten in 2024.

Quote of the Day

“The academics at Penn State is a really big part of my interest in them. They showed me their academics when I was there in January and that was big. The staff is big too. They always welcome me, my family and the culture is great.”
