During his Monday afternoon press conference, Penn State football head coach James Franklin diverged slightly from his typical focus. Asked about his program’s upcoming plans for travel for an Oct. 12 tilt with No. 11-ranked Southern Cal, Franklin acknowledged the Nittany Lions will dispatch to Los Angeles on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Afforded the cushion of an extra day in sunny California, Penn State intends to take advantage in a variety of ways. For the team, that includes a “Fast Friday” practice that is tentatively scheduled to be held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. And, for fans of the Nittany Lions, that also includes a bonus engagement opportunity with the program.

Announced on Tuesday afternoon via social media, Penn State football’s NIL collective, Happy Valley United, has revealed a new event on tap for fans in the area or those making the trip.

On Friday, Oct. 11, the collective will host a “Fan Kickoff Luncheon” at SoFi Stadium following the Nittany Lions’ morning practice. The event will include a tour of the venue and will take place from 12 until 2 p.m.

Attendees are welcomed to the event with tickets being announced at a cost of $300 per person, $500 per couple, or $800 for four people. Ticket proceeds will be directed to help fund NIL contributions to Penn State football players.

Penn State welcomes new Big Ten members in back-to-back games

Set to take on the Trojans on Oct. 12, the matchup for the Nittany Lions will be the second in back-to-back weeks playing former PAC-12 members. First, Penn State will welcome UCLA to Beaver Stadium this weekend for the first time since 1967.

Asked about he program’s approach to handling scouts of the Big Ten newcomers, Franklin acknowledged this week that little changes in the way of learning football intel from a film perspective. However, the travel component, which Penn State is soon to embark upon with its trip to the West Coast next week, is an area that has been of heightened interest throughout the build-up to the game.

“The stuff I would say that you’re asking is really more about, that I think to answer your question is significant, is talking to buddies and friends that have done the cross country travel,” said Franklin. “You do all this planning. Okay, what did you learn? Okay, you actually did it. What did you learn and what would you do differently next time? (We’re) asking a ton of those questions.

“We did a lot of the it ahead of time with NFL teams and other college teams that have done that type of travel. But then also this year being able to talk to other teams and letting our ops people talk to other ops people, talking to head coaches that are friends and saying, ‘Hey, what did you learn from it after doing it now for the first time in Big Ten play? That’s where I think things are maybe different. Game planing and scouting doesn’t change a whole lot based on those opponents.”
