Penn State football picks competitors of the day from fifth winter workout; who are they?
Winter workout number five of eight went into the books on Wednesday morning at Penn State. The Nittany Lions are now on the downside of the workout hill that will wrap up before spring break in early March. Penn State will begin its spring practice on Tuesday, March 14 in Happy Valley.
A few notable names earned repeat shoutouts at key positions. Redshirt freshman quarterback Beau Pribula has now earned four out of five declarations from Mike Yurcich at his position. Outside of a Drew Allar mention on Feb. 14, Pribula has gotten the nod from Yurcich every time. The same can be said about tight end Khalil Dinkins, who earned his fourth honor out of five with his position group.
Safety Zakee Wheatley picked up his second straight mention from safeties coach Anthony Poindexter on Wednesday. Cornerback Cam Miller was shouted out by Terry Smith for his work in the morning session. Smith called Miller’s work ethic “unparalleled.”
There were several first-time acknowledgments by the staff as well.
On the offensive line, Phil Trautwein singled out redshirt freshman interior player Vega Ioane. The Washington native played in four games last season but many believe he can push for more regular time in his second season. The 6-foot-4, 336-pounder is an imposing figure despite his youth.
On the other side of the trenches, defensive tackle Hakeem Beamon earned praise from defensive line coach John Scott Jr. on Wednesday. Beamon is the first interior defensive lineman to earn a shoutout from Scott this winter.
Special Teams coordinator Stacy Collins pointed to redshirt sophomore longsnapper Tyler Duzansky on Wednesday. Duzansky seems to have the upper hand in the battle to replace departed starter and Mannelly Award winner Chris Stoll.
Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Manny Diaz and wide receivers coach Marques Hagans did not make picks on Wednesday.
