We start with what appears to be the first preseason bowl game projections ahead of the 2023 slate kicking off this weekend. Noted postseason expert and longtime college football Brett McMurphy made his first of what will eventually be weekly picks for The Action Network on Monday. He slots Penn State in the Orange Bowl opposite Clemson. It would mean the Lions would qualify for another New Year’s Six Bowl game. But, it would also mean they’d miss the College Football Playoff again.

Media polls from across the country have Penn State locked in at No. 7 ahead of next weekend’s opener against West Virginia. Some at TAN are higher on the Lions than others. One of the outlet’s analysts thinks head coach James Franklin’s team is a good bet to make the CFP this year.

“If they win the Big Ten or they get to the College Football Playoff, that means [Drew] Allar exceeded or lived up to his lofty expectations,” George Stuckey said on The Big Bets On Campus podcast. “That’s really all they need with this defense. That means, to me, with the landscape of college football this year, they’re fully capable of winning the national title and I would love to have a 25 or 30-1 [future bet] in my pocket.”

Quote of the day

“I was talking to my coach right before I went out on that series. He was talking about getting our hands on our receivers in Cover-2. He’s like, ‘Once you get your hands on him, push him out of bounds and look for the ball, because it’s gonna be there.’ And exactly like that, it happened.”
