The season has finally arrived, Penn State fans.

With the College Football Playoff now expanded to 12 teams, expectations are high in Happy Valley this year. But before we look too far down the road, the Nittany Lions have a tough matchup to open the season, as they’ll hit the road to face a West Virginia squad that’ll be looking for revenge.

Last year, Penn State began its season with a 38-15 win over the Mountaineers at Beaver Stadium. Head coach Neal Brown was on the hot seat at the time, but that changed in the following months, as West Virginia went on to win nine games, including a 30-10 win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Now, Penn State is a 7.5-point favorite heading into this weekend’s game, but there are also plenty of questions that need to be answered for the Nittany Lions. At the top of that list is what fans should expect from a revamped Penn State offense that’ll be led by new coordinator Andy Kotelnicki for the first time.

“He’s a really talented play-caller,” Brown said when asked about Kotelnicki on Monday during his pregame press conference. “I remember having a conversation with my agent going into the Buffalo game when we were [at Troy] and I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know this guy, but he does some really good stuff offensively.’ So, he’s a guy I’ve known and has kind of been on my radar for some time now. So, he’s going to figure it out. They’re not going to look like they did at Kansas.”

Blue White Illustrated’s Projected Depth Chart

Of course, the football program also stopped releasing depth charts last year. Most of the starters are known by now, but there are a few positions that haven’t been announced publicly. Add in who’s projected to be second or third-team and there’s a lot to be learned both tomorrow and in the coming weeks when Penn State hosts Bowling Green and Kent State.

But for now, our staff at Blue White Illustrated has put together the information we’ve collected out of preseason camp to put together our best estimate as to what Penn State’s depth chart will look like Saturday afternoon in Morgantown.
