Penn State’s 2024 recruiting class came into the week already ranking among the nation’s best at No. 10 overall in On3’s Team Rankings. Now, following Monday’s release of the updated On300, the Nittany Lions have climbed even further to No. 8 in the nation.

Following updates at 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN in recent weeks, the Penn State saw multiple committed players make big strides in the rankings after a busy couple of months on the camp circuit.

No one has climbed higher than Cheshire Academy tight end Luke Reynolds who now ranks No. 81 nationally by On3. He came into the day ranking No. 222 in the On3 Industry Rankings. He’s now all the way to No. 89 nationally, which makes him the second-ranked player in the class in the Industry Rankings behind only Ath. Quinton Martin.

But overall, more than half of the class improved at least slightly following Monday’s update. Penn State’s class rating jumped from a 90.727 to a 91.021. DE Mylachi Williams, OL Cooper Cousins, QB Ethan Grunkemeyer, Saf. Dejuan Lane, OL Eagan Boyer and WR Peter Gonzalez all made sizable jumps in the Industry Rankings, which helped facilitate the overall rise in the team rankings.

Understanding On3’s Team Rankings

For those unfamiliar with On3’s Team Rankings, there are two major differences compared to other sites that you need to know.

1) We use the Industry Rankings, which uses all four major recruiting sites – On3, 247, Rivals and ESPN – to find a commutative score. It’s not based on just On3’s rankings.

2) On3’s Team Recruiting Rankings solve the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle by totaling the highest-rated commitments for each team based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power 5 schools. Currently, that average total is 11 players.

Overall, the goal is to accurately project where the Nittany Lions will truly finish come National Signing Day, not where they rank at this moment in time because they simply have more committed players than other schools.

Where does Penn State rank in the Big Ten?

While a lot has changed between the top 30 or so schools, not a whole lot has changed at the top of the Big Ten with Penn State remaining fourth overall behind Ohio State, Michigan and USC.

The Buckeyes have the top-ranked class still and are No. 2 overall nationally. Ohio State is up to three five-star commitments now following the addition of Justin Scott last week. They have an overall class score of 93.208.

The Wolverines and USC both held firm at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Michigan’s class climbed slightly from a 91.420 to a 91.472. USC went from a 91.389 to a 91.455. Both are marginal moves.

After Penn State at No. 8, there remains a significant gap to the rest of the Big Ten. Nebraska sits at No. 20 nationally. Behind the Cornhuskers you’ll find Purdue (No. 24), Wisconsin (No. 26), Iowa (No. 30) and Minnesota (No. 31) and Michigan State (No. 34) rounding out the Top 10.
