Penn State head coach James Franklin discusses Class of 2022: Watch
Penn State head coach James Franklin met with the media Wednesday afternoon to discuss the Class of 2022.
The Nittany Lion coaching staff put together one of its best classes under Franklin’s leadership. As of 4:00 pm Wednesday, Penn State remained at No. 7 in the On3 Consensus rankings. That’s second in the Big Ten.
Franklin had a lot to say about the class.
“It’s a balance of offense and defense,” Franklin said, who’s now overseen nine recruiting classes at Penn State. “For 12 years, we’ve had, for the most part, very little drama on signing day. The relationships we’ve developed and the process we have, it’s been pretty smooth from that perspective. We have 10 guys coming in, in terms of early enrollees. We’re pretty balanced across the board positionally, and excited about the guys we are bringing in.
“The type of young men that we’ve been able to recruit both as athletes and with the body types that we’re looking for in terms of growth potential, athleticism, speed; we had 17 of them in some form of a camp with us. Overall, we’re very, very pleased. The early enrollee thing continues to grow for us, which I think is a positive. We still have another signing period, and some transfer portal possibilities as well.”

Keeping the players committed to Penn State throughout rumors and coaching changes was also a popular topic.
“There was a lot of communication going on with our current team, with our recruits and parents, so they felt informed and weren’t shocked by anything. We were able to ride that out,” said the Penn State head coach. “A season that saw some unbelievable highs and some challenges, as well, and no one really blinked. I love the character in this class as much as anything else.
“Losing [former Penn State defensive coordinator] Brent Pry, as you guys know, Virginia Tech got a great one. I’m really happy for Brent. His wife was at our signing day today. She’s still apart of the family and in town. Me and Manny Diaz have a lot of similar philosophies, so I think that helps. A proven DC with a successful track record to back it up, and then obviously the head coach experience is going to be valuable as well. Even through that process, but was communicating with team and recruits.
