Top Penn State wide receiver target Lex Cyrus sets commitment date for later this week
Penn State fans have been eagerly waiting to learn where Susquehanna Twp. wide receiver Lex Cyrus is expected to end up. Now, we have an answer for when that announcement is expected to come.
On Monday afternoon, the four-star wide receiver and Harrisburg, Pa., native confirmed with Blue White Illustrated that he’s planning to announce his commitment this upcoming Thursday, July 11. The decision is expected to come around 3 p.m. eastern time and will be announced publicly at his school.
Ranked No. 109 nationally in Monday’s updated On300, Cyrus has been near the top of Penn State’s wide receiver board dating back to last fall. After winning the PIAA 3A 100-meter final in May 2023, Cyrus had a breakout junior season, totaling 67 receptions for more than 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns.
“I think the past year is a great example of a student-athlete seeing where he needed to develop and really working on it,” said Susquehanna Twp. head coach Joe Headen. “Now, he’s seeing those results come together. Is he where he needs to be still? No, but he’s seeing the results and seeing himself get better. The impression was he’s a track guy who plays football, but Lex would always tell you he’s a football guy first.”

Headen went on to add, “This spring, he’ll have a full track practice and still will find time after to get one of us to throw him balls on the jugs machine. So, his drive to continue developing has played a massive role. Also, the feedback he got from Penn State’s coaches last year was big. After he camped, they made it clear to him that he needed to work on catching the ball better, becoming a better route runner, all of those things. I think also playing in some of those national 7-on-7 tournaments has been big, too. It’s given him a chance to see where he stacks up against the best players in the country.”

While Penn State had already offered the 5-foot-10, 175-pound speedster, Cyrus saw a surge in prominent schools make that same move following his season. The first to acknowledge his progress was South Carolina, who offered Cyrus on Jan. 15. It’s now the Gamecocks who represent Penn State’s main competitor in this race.
While schools like Maryland, Miami, Rutgers, Syracuse, Texas and West Virginia all hosted him for unofficial visits at one point, South Carolina and Penn State were the only two schools that Cyrus took official visits to in June. The Nittany Lions hold a massive edge in overall visits, hosting him seven times since April 2022, but the Gamecocks have given him plenty to think about.
