Penn State is 6-1, and it has had the chance to play numerous first-year players throughout its first seven games. Saturday’s 45-17 win over Minnesota marked another opportunity to put members of the Class of 2022 on the field early and late in the eventual blowout.

“We’re 1-0 and we’re happy to be 1-0,” head coach James Franklin said. “It was a good win. It was a great environment with a ton of recruits there that are going to have a huge impact on our future.

“This was a good win for us against a good opponent at home. And obviously, with a bunch of people who are going to have a significant impact on our future, so for a lot of different reasons, it was important.”

Here’s the latest redshirt report after seven weeks.

Which first-year Penn State players played against Minnesota?

Let’s start with corner Cam Miller. The corner played in his fourth game of the season on Saturday. So, if he plays again this fall, which feels likely, he will no longer be able to preserve a year of eligibility. Miller played eight snaps on defense in the win. He recorded no counting stats, however.

Running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton both had big games. The former carried 15 times for 77 yards, while the latter had 13 rushing attempts for 79 yards and two touchdowns.

“I’ve been impressed with those guys all year long, two true freshmen that I think are playing at a high level,” Franklin said. “We were able to stick with the game plan and stick with the run.

“I thought that the run that Kaytron had early on, where he ran over safety was a big-time run that got us going. Nick was able to break one there at the end. We just have to keep chipping away at it. We’re able to run the ball a little bit more consistently. We have got to continue to build on that and we’re also protecting well. That’s our O-line and running backs doing a good job.”
