James Franklin addresses Penn State White Out Game, Offense during Summer Update

Penn State has set its game themes for th 2024 home schedule at Beaver Stadium, including one long-anticipated White Out announcement. Revealed on Twitter on Monday afternoon, the Nittany Lions will host Washington on Nov. 9 for its annual White Out at Beaver Stadium.

The news comes more than a month after the program has traditionally revealed its premiere game on the home slate. The Nittany Lions have met Washington just three times in program history, beating the Huskies on all three occasions.

Penn State has faced both Ohio State and Michigan in the FOX Big Noon slot the past two seasons, leaving Minnesota and Iowa as White Out games in 2022 and 2023. As a result, head coach James Franklin indicated in his interview with Blue-White Illustrated this summer what he’d like to see for the program’s fans regarding one of college football’s showcase traditions.

“We’re just trying to provide what our fans want,” Franklin told BWI. “And for a long time, the fans got used to every other year, it was pretty much Ohio State or Michigan, with some other games mixed in there. So, you were able to get all of it. You were able to get the opponent. You were able to get the night game… it’s just a very different experience than an afternoon game.

“As much as the networks have proven, specifically FOX, that this 12 o’clock game has been a huge win for the network and really for our conference, even with that, it’s still hard to sell our fans on the fact that a night game in Beaver Stadium isn’t bigger.”

With Washington, that goal comes into focus. Due to the daylight savings time changeover on Nov. 3, 2024, the Nittany Lions’ home date with the Huskies has an estimated sunset at roughly 4:50 p.m. in State College.
