Penn State faces a unique challenge in Oregon
Most coaches build their teams in a style that chooses one attribute over another. Some prefer physically dominant, big football players who can powerfully control space. Others want to deploy speed at every program level to take away space differently. Few teams can combine size and speed the way Oregon has this season.
“I think that’s what everybody’s trying to do, right? You’re trying to get as many big athletes as you possibly can,” Penn State head coach James Franklin said earlier this week.
“We’ve talked about this in the past. On offense, you’re trying to create space. On defense, you’re trying to take space away. How do you do that? You can do that with size in terms of weight and being sturdy and not allow people to get any movement on on you. You can do it with size in terms of length and taking up space on the field. And then you can do it with speed, in terms of being able to close space down as quick as you possibly can. And when you can have a combination of all those traits, then that it makes for a very, very challenging opponent.”

Oregon presents a unique challenge on defense
We’ll start the show by discussing the Penn State offenses’ matchup with the Oregon defense. The Ducks’ defensive line presents a multitude of challenges that will make it difficult to run the football on Saturday evening. Tengwall will discuss those challenges and how the team can try to counter them.
Next, we’ll discuss which players need to play their best or above expectations during the game for Penn State to have a shot at winning a Big Ten Title. Can Penn State finally get a complete performance out of its offense for four quarters? We’ll discuss some of the challenges and some of the opportunities for offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and his squad.
Defensive line must match the moment
For Penn State to win, the defense must become the best version of itself after several uneven performances down the stretch. Can the defensive line lead the charge and drag Oregon into deep water from a game flow perspective? We’ll discuss the team’s chances of making that happen and the challenges that Oregon’s offense presents.
