Can the Penn State offense keep up its momentum on the ground?

On a cold, windy day in late December, the Penn State run game figures to be a pivotal element in the game. The team used several schematic tricks to help get its ground game going against Oregon in the Big Ten Championship game. But will those ideas translate to this game after SMU has seen them on film with an extra week to prepare? Franklin discussed “going to the well one too many times” earlier this week.

“I’m like you guys: When we go to it and it works, it’s awesome. And when it doesn’t, it sucks, right? I think that’s the fine line with all this stuff. How much you do on offense, how much you do on defense that you do well. How many times you call something to make sure that they can defend it, but then when do you stop? You call it one too many times, and now it’s not as effective. So that’s the fine line. It’s not a science. It’s also an art to it,” he said.

We’ll preview the matchup between Penn State’s offense and SMU. Can quarterback Drew Allar replicate his impressive performance against Oregon without the turnovers? We’ll preview that idea and discuss tight end Tyler Warren’s chances of a big day.

Defense faces most dynamic threat of the season

While Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel is the overall best quarterback on Penn State’s schedule, SMU passer Kevin Jennings may be the most dangerous. He’s athletic, extends plays to pass, and can be lethal in the option run game. Franklin had a stunning comparison for playing style.

“Lamar. We haven’t played the Baltimore Ravens. But that’s who he reminds me of. Athletic, can extend plays, can make big plays, does a really good job of keeping his eyes down the field. I think that’s his style of play. I don’t know if we have anybody else that we have played this year that’s similar to him. But his game really reminds me a lot of Lamar Jackson.”

We’ll discuss how the team can contain Jennings and how the team can neutralize his impact on the game.
