Dante Cephas has to grow up quickly
Penn State head coach James Franklin got several questions about the wide receiver room this week after Trey Wallace went down with an injury early against Indiana and returned to the field in a sling. Transfer wide receiver Dante Cephas had made his way into the starting 11-personnel lineup earlier in the year, but his presence is magnified now.
Is he ready?
“I think sometimes, these transfers, it’s a little bit like junior college players,” Franklin said. “Where typically the second half of the year, they really start to get more comfortable and come on. Or, sometimes, you have the opportunity to get them for a second year, and that’s really valuable. We’ve been fortunate with COVID to get some of those junior college guys for three years. But there’s value in that, obviously.

“So, he’s getting more comfortable. I think we put a little bit more on the guys in terms of splits, in terms of route adjustments, in terms of, just responsibilities. But he’s gotten more and more comfortable and more and more confident as he’s gotten more reps and gotten more opportunities.”
Penn State defense tackling will be tested
We discussed the Maryland offense earlier this week on the BWI Live show. The team’s secondary will face a tough challenge this afternoon, thanks to the way Maryland’s offense is set up. With so many screen passes to defend, tackling will be an emphasis.
“Opportunities for growth, we were tackling too high. We need to wrap and consistently wrap and tackle lower,” Franklin said in his review of the last game.
Finally, we’ll be talking about Penn State quarterback Drew Allar’s struggles on the road. The first-year starter has had a noticeable dip in his productivity on the road.
