Penn State football will soon kick off its annual winter workout run that carries it into spring practices ahead of the 2025 season. Overseen by head strength coach Chuck Losey and his staff, some work takes place in the weight room at the Lasch Building. The rest of the magic happens across the way at Holuba Hall, where conditioning drills that include typical running and speed and agility work plus things like tug-o-war and more build the competitive spirit needed to eventually put the pads back on.

“Not really working on anything in winter workouts but really competing,” second-year defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam said. “I want to really showcase my competitiveness. I feel like I showcased it a little bit last summer, during summer workouts, but I feel like it needs to come alive in the winter.”

“It’s all about winning reps. Winter workouts ae a lot of competition to just win in reps, and competing. Like, all of what we do with conditioning, at the end, it’s really about competing, and a lot goes into that.”

Penn State is modifying its winter workout plan

There will be fewer opportunities for players to compete this time around compared to past seasons. That’s because of both how long the Lions’ 2024 season lasted and also how long it could play in 2025 and into 2026, if all goes the way the team wants it to.

“We’ve gotten back into the weight room—I think we talked about this before—the players had about two weeks off after the season; long season,” head coach James Franklin said. “So had two weeks off. We’re getting back into workouts now. We’ll get ready to get started with winter workouts here pretty soon, which is our morning mat workouts.

“I think most of you guys know that we typically have anywhere between eight to 10. Again, based on the schedule, we’ll probably have six of those this year. We have to make modifications based on the calendar and how long we played into the season.”

The winter workout schedule is not yet out. In some years, Penn State has split them between spring break. That is March 9 – 15 this year. Either way, spring practices are now about a month and a half away. And, the work that goes on between now and then will set the foundation for them.
