Penn State football continues its march toward the start of spring practices.

But first, ahead of the March 21 kickoff and April 23 Blue-White Game, the Nittany Lions are progressing through their on-field winter workouts. Set for a Tuesday/Thursday schedule throughout February, that remained true Thursday morning from Holuba Hall.

Holding with norms, Penn State’s coaching staff sent out acknowledgments to top performers at every position group for the day’s effort.

Among them, the Nittany Lions added new faces for recognition to join a few others who have made frequent appearances on the list.

First-time Penn State winter workout winners

Thursday was a day of firsts for the Penn State selections among the top performers.

In total, five new Nittany Lions joined the fray. Maybe more important, for the first time this month, Penn State added a few notable true freshmen early enrollees to the list.

Leading the way among the first-timers, quarterback Beau Pribula became the first true freshman performer to crack a club that had, until Thursday, exclusively been owned by Sean Clifford (three) and Christian Veilleux (2).

Similarly notable, five-star running back Nick Singleton earned his first recognition by assistant coach Ja’Juan Seider. To date, only Keyvone Lee, Caziah Holmes and and Devyn Ford had earned public nods from the running backs coach.

Three other first-timers also made a splash Thursday with their winter workout performances. At tight end, redshirt freshman Khalil Dinkins earned a shout out from Ty Howle. Smith Vilbert earned his first nod among the Penn State defensive ends. And, in a list that now numbers just three, receiver Mason Stahl joined Sebastian Constantini and punter Barney Amor as run-ons to be recognized.

Other notable workout standouts

Speaking of Constantini, the redshirt junior safety was one of five Nittany Lions to be recognized for a second or third time this winter.

Also included in that group were tackle Olu Fashanu, linebacker Jon Sutherland, cornerback Kalen King, and place kicker Jake Pinegar. Both King and Pinegar notched their third acknowledgments out of the six sessions so far this month, joining Sean Clifford and Keyvone Lee as three-time winners. Tight end Theo Johnson remains Penn State’s only four-time winner.
