Penn State football's latest commitment improves ranking
Penn State’s busy week in recruiting took another big step Friday morning with the commitment of Kaveion Keys. The four-star linebacker carries with him a ranking of No. 3 in Virginia and is No. 177 overall in the On3 300.
And for the first time this week, the Nittany Lions’ spot in the updated On3 Team Football Recruiting Rankings changed with a commitment.
Previously holding steady at No. 14, Keys’ commitment gave the Nittany Lions enough juice to land at No. 13 and overtake Oregon’s position in the rankings. Penn State’s overall score now checks in at 91.789, up from 91.644. And, now at 22 commitments, the Nittany Lions still have room to move in front of Southern Cal, who sits close by with a score of 91.814.
With Keys’ verbal, Penn State now has 15 four-star commitments and 7 three-stars. The group’s average player rating is 90.57, which is good for 12th nationally.

Explaining Penn State’s national ranking
Using an evolving system, comparative strength of recruiting classes is evaluated across the national college football landscape. Right now, the number for average class size against which all programs are judged is 18 commitments, with recruits rated below that excluded from the calculation.
This week, Mason Robinson’s commitment didn’t move the needle at all for the Nittany Lions due to that very fact. But, with the additions of Keys and Joseph Mupoyi, Penn State’s calculus changed enough to push the ranking to 13th.
An updated look at the Big Ten
In the Big Ten, Penn State’s standing didn’t change with this week of commitments. At the top of the conference, Ohio State dropped a spot to No. 5 nationally. Penn State follows at No. 13. Michigan State (No. 19), Michigan (22), Iowa (29), Northwestern (35), and Minnesota (42) are next. And Illinois (46), Maryland (47), Wisconsin (50), Nebraska (53), Purdue (55), Rutgers (56), and Indiana (76) round out the list.
