Penn State football’s newest verbal commitment, running back Cameron Wallace, didn’t change the program’s spot in the updated On3 Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings. Holding firm at No. 13, the Nittany Lions remain behind No. 12 Southern Cal while staying comfortably ahead of No. 14 Oregon.

But, they’re oh-so-close to taking that 12th-place standing at the early signing period nears.

Wallace checks in as a three-star prospect, ranked No. 81 among all running backs in the class. He’s also considered the 115th-ranked recruit out of Georgia for the Class of 2023.

Penn State beat out Georgia Tech for Wallace’s commitment.

Explaining Penn State’s national ranking

Given his standing relative to the rest of Penn State’s recruiting class, one now boasting 15 four-stars and eight three-stars, Wallace’s commitment actually didn’t change the Nittany Lions’ standing. Rather, with the metric of total commitments changing from 18 to 19 for national class size standards, Penn State’s overall score of 91.789, earned after the commitment of four-star linebacker Kaveion Keys last week, has since dropped slightly to 91.583.

The Nittany Lions’ per-recruit average also dipped slightly from 90.57 to 90.32. That average rating score is also good for 13th nationally.

An updated look at the Big Ten

Penn State’s standing in the Big Ten hasn’t changed and doesn’t appear to be in danger as signing day approaches.

Ohio State continues to carry the day in the conference, holding the four-spot nationally. With the Nittany Lions trailing at No. 13, the next-closest competitor is Michigan. The Wolverines are No. 20, with MSU at No. 22 and Iowa at No. 30.

Northwestern is 35th, Minnesota 41st, Nebraska 45th, Illinois 46th, Maryland 47th, and Rutgers 54th. Wisconsin is 55th, Purdue 58th, and Indiana is 77th.
