Penn State news, notes, and updates for March 17 include a new spring top 25, headlines of the day, and more. It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

Penn State is still No. 4 in Athlon Sports’ second top 25 ahead of the 2025 season. Back in January, Steven Lassan had the Nittany Lions in the same spot. There is a change ahead of head coach James Franklin’s team. Texas is now No. 1 and Ohio State is No. 2. The Longhorns and Buckeyes were flipped earlier this year. Georgia continues to be No. 3. And, Notre Dame rounds out the top five.

“All of the pieces are in place for the Nittany Lions to challenge Ohio State for the Big Ten title and contend for a national championship,” Lassan writes in March. “A revamped receiving corps is under the spotlight this spring.”

Here’s what he wrote in January:

“James Franklin’s program is poised for another deep run in the 2025 season. Quarterback Drew Allar will return after considering an early jump to the NFL and should benefit from another offseason to work under coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. The Nittany Lions lost tight end Tyler Warren to the NFL, but running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen surprisingly opted to return next fall.

“The receiving corps was a major issue in ’24, but help is on the way with transfers Devonte Ross (Troy) and Kyron Hudson (USC). The offensive line is expected to be a strength once again. There are holes to fill on defense with the departure of standout edge-rusher Abdul Carter and coordinator Tom Allen leaving to fill the same role at Clemson. However, linebacker Tony Rojas, safety Zakee Wheatley, end Dani Dennis-Sutton, and cornerback A.J. Harris are back to form a strong foundation. Penn State has to play at Ohio State on Nov. 1 in a potential preview of the Big Ten championship game. Meantime, Oregon, Indiana, and Nebraska all visit Happy Valley next year.”

Quote of the day

“Shayne, he’s a competitor. He’s always moving forward. “Conditioning’s always been a huge factor for him. But he’s also an incredible technician, and just has a great feel for for all things in the sport. So, yeah, those middle weights, all weights are tough, and one seed through five could be, you could switch them and roll them. It’s just whoever decides to go score the most points at the national tournament is going to win. So we have a lot of confidence in Shayne and his ability to put points up and wrestle in any position. So yeah, he’s ready to go.”
