Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media after the team’s practice on Wednesday evening. It’s the final update from Franklin for the 2023 offseason as the team enters game week for West Virginia in the next few days in preparation for the season opener.

The team will begin weekly Tuesday press conferences next week, which you can catch as a live replay moments after Penn State’s head coach is done speaking.

Franklin spoke about the team’s progress as camp concluded and once again was asked about his team’s starting quarterback.

The most notable difference at practice this week was that the team had split into the practice squad and the rest of the team. Franklin explained that most players understand their role on the team.

“I think for a lot of them, they’re pretty self-aware. They’ve seen they haven’t either broken into the two-deep they kind of see the writing on the wall. There’s some guys that aren’t. That’s always the case. There’s some guys that just aren’t as realistic with where they’re at. So some of those conversations are hard, but most of them, they see it the same way as the coaches,” Franklin said.

Despite moving the team into a regular season depth chart, Franklin was still unwilling to name a starter at quarterback between Drew Allar and Beau Pribula.

“No. We have not even done it as a staff yet.”

That competition, and the competition at other positions, will continue into game prep for West Virginia. That won’t change the nature of the battle, according to Franklin.

“Even though there’s competitions going on, there’s still guys that go out with the first group, and there’s guys that go out and second, guys and go out the third group, and that hasn’t really changed. There’s been a little bit there’s been some guys that have gotten two reps. Some guys have gotten one rep and gone back and forth. We’ve done some of that. But it really doesn’t change. You know, obviously, one thing I would say changes is you just don’t have as many reps for threes. It’s more it’s more of a ones and twos.
