Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media today to prepare for his team’s showdown with Rutgers this weekend. But the only topic of discussion on Monday was Franklin’s decision to fire offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich on Sunday. The head coach fielded questions about the decision to move on from Yurcich, from the issues he saw on game day to why he chose to make the decision now and not wait until after the season.

Franklin honest about lack of QB rhythm plays in offense.

After the game, Franklin was asked about how Penn State quarterback Drew Allar wasn’t in rhythm during the game and how the offense didn’t set him up for that. He expounded on that in the light of his decision to remove Yurcich.

“As you can imagine, I have conversations about all the things I have concerns about. Moreso, than I speak in these press conferences,” Franklin said.

He went on to list other Penn State offensive issues, including fast starts, opening drives, and more that the staff has discussed in depth before games. He admitted that he was dissatisfied with the results.

“A lot of times when we got to the game, either we did not call the game that way, or we did not execute the game the way we intended to. So yes, those things were asked for.”

Impact on Allar a big focus of questions

While Franklin didn’t get his wish for most of the questions to be about Penn State’s game against Rutgers, he did field many questions about the impact of the decision to remove the QB coach and coordinator on his quarterback. Going into this next game, what does he want to see from his young signal-caller moving forward?

“We’d love to finish on a really, really high note this year as a team. Then specifically as an offense and at the quarterback position. I feel good about that moving forward in terms of the relationships in the building,” Franklin said.
