Penn State head coach James Franklin press conference: Live updates
The stage is set for Penn State football this spring.
The Nittany Lions just might not love how it looks. Coming off a disappointing 7-6 campaign in 2021 that included a 5-0 start and a climb to No. 4 in the national rankings, Penn State fell off dramatically with a 2-6 finish.
Capped by a 24-10 loss to Arkansas in the Outback Bowl in which Penn State suffered a rash of NFL Draft opt-outs and injuries, the Nittany Lions limped into the offseason with back-to-back losses.
“I think obviously ending the season on a positive note with wins, whether it’s the end of the season or bowl games or whatever it may be, I think that’s important going into the offseason,” head coach James Franklin said in November. “I think obviously there are times when things don’t go well and that’s motivation as well. Depending on who you open the season with next year, that’s motivation as well.
“I don’t know if there’s one specific way to look at it or one specific way that it plays out. I think it depends on the personality of your team year to year. But obviously, whenever possible, you want to end on a positive note. You want to start on a positive note. You want the middle to be on a positive note.
“From production on the field standpoint, from a recruiting perspective to offseason good vibes and those types of things, mojo, that’s what we all want. I want the fans, and the media, and the players, and their families, and the community all feeling great, which for the most part that’s how it’s been around here.”

Not this year.
That feeling has largely been replaced by optimism though as the Nittany Lions move ahead. With plenty of positivity surrounding the introduction of nine Class of 2022 early enrollees, as well as a top-notch transfer in receiver Mitchell Tinsley, Penn State begins its spring practices Monday afternoon with a sense of purpose.
